I am pleased to share this report chronicling the University of Vermont’s commitment to service-learning and community engagement. A commitment to service is deeply ingrained in the heritage and character of UVM. It is reflected in our mission as a land grant university; in the pioneering thought of the father of American progressive education – John Dewey, UVM Class of 1879; and in the work of our faculty, students and alumni.
In the past year 4,000 University of Vermont students participated in 117,500 hours of community service valued at $2.5 million, and 20% of our students enrolled in one or more service-learning courses in collaboration with 200 community partners. We were once again recognized as a national leader by the Peace Corps, with 857 UVM alumni having served as Peace Corps volunteers around the world.
Community engagement is a hallmark of the University of Vermont educational experience, where academic excellence and service to others go hand in hand. We prepare graduates to succeed and to serve; and our alumni go on to do remarkable things.
We are enormously proud of our many contributions and positive impacts around the corner, around the state, and around the world.
